While it’s an exciting and precious time in a new parent’s life to welcome a baby, it’s the “what-happens-next” part that can be so daunting. This is especially the case with first-time parents, and if you’re in this category, please remember that you’re not alone. Fortunately, in Australia it’s common to be invited to join a parents group once you’ve welcomed your baby into the world. These groups offer so much more than just meeting new mums, dads and bubs. There are mental and physical health benefits too, and it’s great for your baby’s development.
At Hatch Private Maternity, we know how important it is to have ongoing support. That is why this month we are launching our parents group for all families of our newest Hatchlings. Hatch Parents Group at Jugar provides a relaxed, fun and friendly environment to share experiences and learn more about your new baby. If you are hesitant at the thought of joining a parents group, why not give it a try?
Just as you were supported throughout your pregnancy and birthing journey by your team of midwives and obstetricians, our parents group will extend the care. We link you with like-minded peers going through similar experiences, at roughly the same time.
Benefits of meeting other parents include:
- Becoming part of an instant support network,
- Learning from each other and discovering different ways of parenting,
- Taking time out from home life,
- Connecting and making new friends in your local area,
- Finding out about childcare options or activities for young ones,
- Being able to talk about your feelings and emotions as a new parent, and
- The opportunity to make life-long friends.
Many parents’ groups can appear like there is a lot of coffee-drinking and laughter happening. However, it really points to more important factors, including the above-mentioned benefits, and avoiding social isolation. Social isolation can be a risk factor for postnatal depression and anxiety. Though it may seem like a social outing, it really is helping new parents by strengthening their social bonds and reducing stress.
PANDA (Perinatal Anxiety & Depression Australia) reports that one of the most common challenges parents face after having a baby, is knowing what is “normal” and what is not. How it can be difficult to learn how to be a parent, and about the needs and behaviours of a new baby. Keeping connected to community and feeling supported emotionally can have a huge impact on a new parent’s well-being following pregnancy.
Introducing: Hatch Parents Group
Our Hatch Parents Group aims to support families in a friendly environment. On occasion, guest speakers will be invited along to speak about feeding, sleeping, and other parenting-related topics.
One of Hatch Maternity’s midwives will always be on hand, to confidentially speak to regarding any questions you may have – whether that be about breastfeeding, sleeping or the emotional adjustment to parenthood. Many of the topics covered will focus on supporting new mums, dads and babies up to six months of age. We are even happy to take your baby for a walk while you enjoy your coffee and meal with two hands!
The first 10-week rotation of Hatch Parents Group will meet every Wednesday from 10:30am to 12pm at Jugar in West End, commencing on 29 January 2020. The cafe is easily accessible with free parking and pram access. Facilities include a full kitchen menu, beverages and cakes, with a fantastic playground for the older siblings. N.B: Siblings under 7 are welcome with a $5 fee for use of the indoor playground.
